Most people think that your cars exhaust system
does nothing more than release the wastes from
their car. The exhaust system does remove the
wastes from your car's engine making it run more
efficiently and get better gas mileage, as well
as filtering and treating the waste so that is
as harmless to the environment as possible.
When your exhaust system goes bad, it can cause
air leaks that will cause your engine not to run
as efficiently as possible, as well as dumping
more pollution into the air than is necessary. A
healthy exhaust system is critical if you are to
maintain the health and welfare of the vehicle
occupants, a quiet smooth running engine and
optimum fuel efficiency.
Replacing your exhaust system when it is worn
out can also be a safety issue, it takes a hole
of 50c in your exhaust system to put you to
sleep because of the fumes, and noise can be
distracting to you as you are driving. Between
the two this can spell disaster so be sure to
keep your exhaust system to date and in good
repair.
What happens should my exhaust fail?
Exhausts have four main functions:
- to control noise
- to direct exhaust fumes away
from passengers
- to improve the performance of
the engine
- to improve fuel consumption
An exhaust is a series of pipes that links the
engine to a silencer and a catalytic converter.
The tailpipe is the part of the exhaust that you
can see extending from the back of the car. The
silencer joins onto the tailpipe, then a series
of further pipes joins the silencer to the
catalytic converter and then the engine.
Exhausts can corrode from both the inside and
outside. How long your exhaust lasts depends on
how far and how often you drive your car rather
than the length of time it has been fitted.
Vehicles used for short trips around town tend
to corrode their exhausts in a much shorter time
and distance than cars used predominately for
long journeys.
At Eastern Mechanical we Install Quality
Mufflers & Exhaust Systems
These days exhaust systems are made from
stainless steel parts to keep them from rusting
like they used to do, but this does not mean
that an exhaust system is not subject to age and
wear and tear so it will still need to be
inspected and replaced from time to time to make
sure that your car runs at its optimum.
Some of the symptoms of an exhaust system that
may indicate that it is time to replace it
include if your car sounds too loud, or makes
noises that you had not heard for before. A
hissing may indicate that your tail pipe needs
replacing and an excessively noisy exhaust
system indicates that possibility that there may
be holes in your pipes, catalytic converter or
your muffler. If your engine over heats or lacks
power you may have a damaged muffler or tailpipe
that is causing too much back pressure on the
engine.
